Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program
Makes Walkable Sidewalks A Reality

HOUSTON, TX. (April 17, 2015) – City of Houston residents can now make sidewalk repair easier and faster, thanks to a new program through the Department of Public Works and Engineering (PWE). The program is called the Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program.

The Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program offers resident’s a list of pre-approved contractors, a defined scope of work and a set pricing structure – thus eliminating the guesswork. An additional incentive for Houstonians who utilize this program is that they will no longer be required to pay the permitting fee or bonding fee charges to those who opt not to participate in the Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program.

“The new streamlined program is designed to simplify sidewalk repair for citizen’s and to improve quality of life within Houston neighborhood’s while also keeping our city’s infrastructure safe,” said Dale Rudick, Director of the Department of Public Works and Engineering.

The program, which is similar to the existing Safe Sidewalk Program, was adopted by City Council on Thursday, April 15, 2015. Unlike the Safe Sidewalk Program, the Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program requires the approved contractor to pay for and pull required permits while citizens are responsible for the cost of the sidewalk project.

To submit your application, go to the Privately Funded Sidewalk Repair, Replace and Installation Program webpage. Once approved, PWE will evaluate the site and create a draft work order and estimated project cost. After which, the project is handed off to one of two pre-approved contractors, who will then confirm the total cost. The cost and completion timeline of the project will be provided to citizens within one month of the request. Citizens must submit payment prior to the release of the work order to the contractor.
